Polyurea is a fast-curing elastomeric coating that forms a tough, flexible, water-resistant membrane. It is sprayed or hand-applied as a two-part liquid system (Part A resin + Part B hardener).

Compared with epoxy, polyurea cures in seconds to minutes instead of hours, is far more flexible, resists abrasion and impact, and tolerates a wider temperature range. Epoxy is harder and more chemically resistant, but brittle and slow to cure.

In short: epoxy for hard, chemical-resistant floors and tanks; polyurea for impact, abrasion, fast turnaround and outdoor exposure.

Polyurea is one of the fastest-curing coating systems available:

  • Gel time: 3–10 minutes for most spray grades
  • Touch-dry: 10–30 minutes
  • Full cure: 24 hours for normal foot traffic, 48–72 hours for heavy vehicle or forklift traffic
  • Chemical resistance: fully cured after 7 days

This is the main practical advantage over epoxy, which needs 7 days before forklift traffic and can take weeks to fully cure in cool or humid conditions.

The right film thickness depends on the substrate and the service condition:

  • 0.5–1.0 mm — decorative sealing, dust protection, concrete surfaces
  • 1.5–2.0 mm — standard industrial protection, tank linings, pipe coating
  • 2.5–3.0 mm — heavy abrasion, water immersion, splash zones
  • 4.0 mm and above — heavy-duty offshore, mining, and impact-prone areas

Always confirm with the technical data sheet for the specific product code. We can recommend the correct system if you share your substrate, service temperature and exposure conditions.

Polyurea has a key advantage here: moisture tolerance. Because it cures chemically rather than by water evaporation, it bonds well to damp concrete and even to slightly wet steel, with no need to wait for full drying.

However, surface preparation still matters. We recommend:

  • Remove all standing water and laitance
  • Grind or shot-blast to a sound surface (typically CSP 3–5 for heavy-duty work)
  • Apply the recommended primer for the substrate

For immersed or continuously wet service, specify a polyurea grade with confirmed wet-substrate adhesion and use the manufacturer-specified primer system.

Coverage depends on film thickness and the theoretical volume of the kit. The practical rule for a 2 mm dry film thickness:

  • 20 kg kit (A + B): covers roughly 8–10 m²
  • 100 kg drum set: covers roughly 40–50 m²

Always apply at the specified thickness using wet-film gauges, and account for 5–10% wastage on rough surfaces, edges and touch-ups.

You can also use our Material Estimator on the site for a quick calculation based on area and product type.

Surface preparation is the single most important factor in coating performance. A typical specification:

  1. Degrease with a suitable solvent or alkaline cleaner
  2. Remove contaminants — rust, scale, mill scale, previous loose coatings
  3. Mechanical preparation — grinding, shot blasting or scarification. Typical CSP 3 for industrial work, CSP 5 for heavy-duty or immersion service
  4. Test for soluble salts (if the substrate has been in a marine or industrial atmosphere)
  5. Repair defects with a suitable filler and re-profile
  6. Prime with the specified primer at the specified DFT

Our Technical Data Sheets include a surface preparation table for each product.

Certain polyurea grades are certified for potable water contact and for food-processing environments. We supply products with the relevant certification on request.

For potable water applications, always specify a product that carries a valid drinking-water approval and ask us for the certification documents before ordering. Note that a full system (primer + coating) must be approved, not just the topcoat.

Yes. Every shipment includes the Technical Data Sheet for the product supplied. We can also provide:

  • MSDS / SDS for all products
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA) for specific batches
  • Potable water or food-contact certification where applicable
  • Product samples for trial application before full ordering

Send us the product code or application details and we will provide the relevant documentation.

It depends on the specific product line:

  • Hot-spray polyurea (e.g. DSTD-GB2): typically 1:1 by volume, applied with plural-component spray equipment, pot life only a few minutes at spray temperature
  • Hand-applied / low-pressure polyurea (e.g. DSTD-41): 4:1 by volume, applied with a simple spray gun or brush, longer pot life
  • Single-component polyurea (e.g. DSTD-S1): no mixing at all — the hardener is pre-dosed in the drum

Always confirm the ratio and pot life from the TDS before mixing. Incorrect ratios cause poor cure and failed adhesion.

It depends on the application method:

  • Hand brush or roller — single-component grades only. No machine needed
  • Small airless spray gun — hand-applied two-component grades. This is the 3rd-generation polyaspartic approach
  • High-pressure plural-component spray rig — required for hot-spray polyurea. This is 1st-generation polyurea and needs a proper machine

We manufacture and supply both spray machines and full sandwich panel production lines. See our equipment range.

Both are two-component polyurethane-polyurea hybrid systems, but they differ significantly in application:

  • 1st generation spray polyurea — requires a high-pressure plural-component spray machine (typically 100:1+ pressure ratio). Very fast cure, excellent toughness, but needs specialist equipment and trained applicators.
  • 3rd generation polyaspartic polyurea — is also two-component, but can be applied by brush, roller or a small airless spray gun. Longer pot life, easier application, good UV stability and long pot life make it ideal for field work and touch-up.

Both are two-component. The practical difference is the application method and equipment required.

Polyurea is unusually tolerant of difficult conditions, which is one of its main advantages over epoxy and polyurethane:

  • Application temperature: typically from -10 °C to +40 °C, depending on the grade (some grades down to -30 °C)
  • Substrate temperature: must be at least 3 °C above the dew point
  • Relative humidity: up to about 95% for most grades — a major advantage over moisture-sensitive systems

Confirm the specific limits in the TDS for the product you are using.

Blistering and delamination almost always trace back to one of four causes:

  1. Contamination under the coating — salts, oils or moisture trapped below the film. Test for soluble salts before coating
  2. Insufficient surface preparation — the profile is too smooth for the coating to key into
  3. Wrong film thickness — below the specified DFT the coating is porous
  4. Incorrect mixing ratio — off-ratio mixes cure poorly and have weak adhesion

Also check for osmotic blistering, which occurs when a coating applied over concrete or masonry lets moisture travel through and form bubbles. This requires a vapour barrier primer and adequate DFT.

All three are used in industrial coating, but they suit different jobs:

  • Polyurea — fast cure, extreme toughness, abrasion and impact resistance, water immersion, rapid turnaround. Best for tanks, pipelines, offshore, mining, and heavy-duty floors.
  • Polyurethane (PU) — good UV and weather resistance, smooth decorative finish, good for external steel, wooden structures and architectural surfaces.
  • Epoxy — hard, high chemical resistance, excellent for floors, bunds, tanks and pipelines in controlled environments. Slower cure, more brittle, sensitive to surface preparation and moisture during application.

If you are unsure, send us the substrate and service environment and we will recommend the correct system.

Aerogel coating is a high-performance thermal insulation coating with an extremely low thermal conductivity, used to stop heat loss on hot or cold surfaces.

Typical applications:

  • Pipeline and pipe insulation — steam, hot water and chilled lines
  • Industrial tanks and vessels — energy saving and personnel protection
  • Building envelopes — retrofits without adding thickness
  • Oil, gas and petrochemical — where fire performance and slim profile matter

Our aerogel range includes coating, primer and sample kits. See the aerogel range.

Typical shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture for unopened drums, provided storage conditions are met.

Storage guidelines:

  • Store in a dry, cool, ventilated building, ideally between 5 °C and 30 °C
  • Keep drums sealed and upright
  • Protect from direct sunlight and heat
  • Do not store Part A and Part B in mixed or unmarked containers
  • Rotate stock using FIFO

Always stir Part A thoroughly before use and check for a skin or separation before mixing.

Sagging on vertical or overhead surfaces is usually caused by one of the following:

  • Applied too thick in a single pass — polyurea is fast-curing but still needs a wet-film build-up limit per coat
  • Temperature too high — faster cure at higher temperature reduces flow time
  • Wrong solvent or thinner ratio — altering viscosity affects flow
  • Substrate too warm — heat accelerates gel time

Apply in multiple thinner passes, keep the substrate within the specified temperature range, and confirm you are using the correct thinner for the product grade.

1-component (single-component) polyurea has the hardener pre-dosed in the drum. You open it and apply it — no measuring, no mixing, no risk of a wrong ratio. It is ideal for touch-up, small areas and field work where equipment is limited.

2-component polyurea is supplied as separate Part A and Part B drums and must be mixed in the correct ratio immediately before application. It gives superior mechanical properties, larger coverage and better economics on big jobs, and it is what most industrial projects use.

Both are widely used. Many customers keep 1-component on site for repairs and use 2-component for the main works.

Yes. We supply polyurea and polyurethane coatings in a wide range of standard colours, and can produce custom RAL or Pantone shades to order.

For the best result, send us the RAL or Pantone reference and a physical sample if possible — screen colours are unreliable for matching. Custom colour batches normally require a minimum quantity and carry a longer lead time than standard colours.

Send us the details and we will come back with a factory-direct quote. The more you give us, the more accurate the quote:

  • Substrate — steel, concrete, masonry, wood, or other
  • Area to coat in m² (and number of surfaces)
  • Service environment — indoor or outdoor, immersion, chemical exposure, temperature range
  • Desired dry film thickness, or the performance you need
  • Destination country or port
  • Target timeline
